Oct 28, 2019: San Diego District 4 Supervisor Nathan Fletcher has announced plans for a Regional Behavioral Health Hub on 4307 Third Avenue in Hillcrest. You heard the news from CVSAFE originally as the best case location for the proposed Eastlake Psychiatric Hospital. Supervisor Fletcher explains that the Hillcrest location is optimal because it is less than a mile from Scripps Mercy Hillcrest, close to integrated continuous care, emergency services, crisis stabilization services, close to mass transit, co-located with a hub hospital and most importantly it follows the new blueprint for mental health reform model the city developed to fix the currently broken healthcare system.
Speaking plainly - the proposed Eastlake standalone psychiatric hospital lacks all of the above supportive services that have been deemed best practices and therefore is not setup for success. Without the supportive services the proposed psychiatric hospital will follow in the footsteps of a failing mental healthcare system.
So, where is the feasibility study for the proposed Eastlake psych hospital? Where are the supportive services in close proximity? Why is the proposed Eastlake Psychiatric Hospital with 120 inpatient beds costing $50M and the Hillcrest Location with a planned 60 beds costing $115M (remember the land in free in Hillcrest because it's county owned). Why is Scripps going against the blueprint for mental health reform plan and partnering with a notoriously troubled company? $$ Things aren't adding up.
